Overview

The primary responsibility for this position is to manage the construction material testing (CMT) and geotechnical laboratory testing operations, and the group of laboratory personnel.

Responsibilities

Manage laboratory technician(s) by training, developing, and overseeing their work.

Assist with manpower allocation to provide needed level of service.
Conduct employee performance evaluations for laboratory personnel.
Serve as a coach and foster the professional development of staff
Assess the efficiency of the daily operations and current process and procedures, and submit plans for improvement to CMT Department or Branch Manager. Lead the efforts to implement mutually agreed upon improvements
Maintain accreditation of laboratories through CCRL, AMRL, USACE, and/or other applicable agencies/programs.
Perform annual competency evaluations for all laboratory personnel. Delegate the evaluations to designated, qualified professional staff as necessary to ensure that all staff receives the annual competency evaluation for each specific test that they perform.
Ensure that mandatory routine laboratory equipment calibration schedule is met. Delegate calibrations to designated and qualified technicians as necessary.
Maintain the Quality Control Manual for the branch location.
Oversee the preparation of scheduled laboratory inspections by independent national and state agencies.
Ensure that laboratory services are performed in accordance with applicable industry standards.
Review and sign off on laboratory test reports.

Other duties as assigned by the CMT Department or Branch Manager.

 

Qualifications

The Laboratory Manager is expected to have a minimum of 5 to 8 years of experience managing QC/QA services for a variety of geotechnical and construction phase projects and should have had exposure to overseeing the work of a group of laboratory technicians.

The position requires, as a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field and it is preferable that individual obtains PE registration.

The Laboratory Manager must dress, speak, and conduct themselves in a professional manner. A track record of performing multi-disciplinary tasks under sometimes stressful and hectic work schedules is vital to this position.

 

The individual should have strong written and oral communication skills and able to effectively communicate with client representatives, field staff, staff professionals, and management.

The individual is expected to be organized and must be able to coordinate and prioritize tasks. The Laboratory Manager will be required to adhere to the Bldg & Earth philosophy of open communication and team approach, and all corporate principles.

 

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This position is generally full time, with a normal 8-hour work day Monday through Friday.  Weekend work may be assigned as needed.  Hours and days can be adjusted depending on needs of the branch and by permission of the CMT Department or Branch Manager..

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be able to move, lift or carry objects or materials up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance
  2. Visual/hearing ability sufficient to comprehend written/verbal communications in the English language, including the ability to communicate directly and over the telephone and be understood.

TRAVEL
Travel to and from construction work sites or to another branch location, may at times be needed.  No overnight travel is expected for this position.  Exceptions may be made at the request of the CMT Department or Branch Manager, but will be an exception, not the rule.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Possession of a valid state of residence driver’s license.
  2. Ability to be insured under all applicable Corporation insurance policies and requirements.
